Tencent was ordered to remove vulgar online literature and close public WeChat accounts that spread them, according to a government statement Friday.

The National Office for the Fight Against Pornography and Illegal Publications, along with the State Administration of Press and Publication, interviewed executives of the leading tech firm Friday after receiving complaints about public WeChat accounts spreading pornographic and vulgar fictions, said a joint statement from the two departments.

The company was asked to carry out internal inspections, screen suspected public WeChat accounts, and shut down problematic ones, the statement said.

It was also advised to improve screening of content, tighten qualification checks, enhance its blacklisting system and better respond to complaints.
