Chinese stocks closed lower Monday, with the benchmark Shanghai Composite Index down 2.18 percent at 2,542.10 points. The Shenzhen Component Index closed 2.43 percent lower at 7,322.24 points.
The combined turnover at the two bourses stood at 255.44 billion yuan (about 36.82 billion U.S. dollars), down from 282.59 billion yuan the previous trading day.
Most shares declined, with losers outnumbering gainers 1,139 to 238 on the Shanghai bourse and 1,590 to 391 on the Shenzhen bourse.
Wine, food and home appliances were among the sectors that declined the most. Jiangsu King's Luck Brewery Joint-Stock Co., Ltd. and Shanghai Greencourt Investment Group Co., Ltd. dropped by the daily limit of 10 percent to close at 13.39 yuan per share and 3.67 yuan per share respectively.
The ChiNext Index, China's NASDAQ-style board of growth enterprises, lost 1.01 percent to close at 1,250.48 points. Enditem
