Honor, Huawei's sub-brand targeting young consumers, is expanding to smart devices beyond smartphones to build its own ecosystem, the company said yesterday.

Honor, which also launched the latest version of its flagship V20 yesterday, plans to open an offline store next year, chief marketing officer Zhang Xiaoyun said without naming cities.

"Smartphones were just a good entry point for Honor to build an ecosystem for young consumers," said Zhang.

In a new e-commerce platform, Honor offers several categories of products including Honor smartphones, tablets, computers, wearable computing, smart home appliances, consumer electronics and smart accessories.

Other product categories also include watches, drones and game consoles made by Honor and its partners.

The expansion will give Honor another growth engine besides smartphones as that market sees a downturn in demand.

China's smartphone market had a disappointing third quarter, with sales falling 15.2 percent year on year, according to research house Canalys.

Smartphone rival Xiaomi also recently announced a diversification plan, moving into new areas including air purifiers, traveling trunks and blood pressure testers.

Huawei and Honor sales continued growing as of November, which has helped Huawei surpass Apple to become the world's second-biggest smartphone company.

Featuring Huawei's own Kirin 980 processor, a 48-megapixel camera with artificial intelligence, and 3D gaming, Honor's V20 goes on sale from tomorrow, with a starting price of 2,999 yuan (US$434).
