Japanese carmaker Nissan is likely to cancel plans to manufacture its X-Trail model in Sunderland, Britain, Sky News reported on Saturday.

Sky News, quoting unnamed sources, said that Nissan's executives may confirm the cancellation of plans next Monday, which will cast further gloom over an already-embattled sector amid Brexit uncertainty.

"Precise details of Nissan's impending announcement were unclear this weekend," the report said. "It was likely to initially involve abandoning the X-Trail production plans which had been announced in the autumn of 2016."

Nissan employs nearly 7,000 people in Sunderland. The X-Trail production plans had been announced in the autumn of 2016.

"It was unclear this weekend whether Nissan had sought additional support from the government to prevent its U-turn on the X-Trail," Sky said.
