The total scale of China's ultra-high-definition video (UHDV) industry is expected to exceed 4 trillion yuan (596.6 billion U.S. dollars) by 2022, according to an official document.

An action plan for the development of UHDV industry between 2019 and 2022 says that by the end of the period, a sound industrial system for 4K video is expected to be established and breakthroughs will be made in the research and development of products and the industrialization of 8K technology.

The plan also aims to foster a cluster of internationally competitive companies in the field.

The plan was jointly issued by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, National Radio and Television Administration, and the China Media Group (CMG).

Other goals include that the CMG and other qualified local television stations open 4K channels, tests be conducted for producing and broadcasting 8K videos of events of the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympic Games, and the number of UHDV users hit 200 million by 2022.

The plan stresses innovative applications of UHDV in areas such as broadcasting, culture, education, entertainment, security monitoring, medical care, smart transport and industrial manufacturing.

The plan also pledges better government coordination and guidance, widening financing and investment channels, and enhanced efforts in talent pool building to support the industry development.
