CAST annual meeting promotes innovation-driven reform and opening-up

The China Association for Science and Technology (CAST), an organization for China's science and technology workforce, will hold its 21st annual meeting in northeast China's Heilongjiang province on June 29 and 30, it was announced at a press conference in Beijing on Thursday.

The meeting is expected to bring together around 6,000 people, including representatives of over 20 international organizations and 260 high-tech companies, 120 academicians and 130 foreign guests, to discuss various topics related to the theme of "Innovation-driven Reform and Opening-up."

The opening and closing ceremonies will see the presentation of six key reports, including one by Japanese Nobel laureate Ryoji Noyori.

The opening ceremony will also feature a high-level dialogue among renowned scientists, high-tech entrepreneurs, investors and policy experts on the prospects of 5G technologies, while the closing ceremony will see the release of CAST's 2019 lists of major scientific issues and engineering and technological challenges respectively.

The meeting will have three sub-themes, "Science and Technology +," "Northeast China Revitalization" and "Talent Cultivation and Introduction," for which about 30 activities are planned.

For the "Science and Technology +" focus, there will be high-level exchanges on the development of science organizations, think tanks and science journals as well as a high-level dialogue between Chinese and Japanese scientists.

Some of the world's top science organizations including IEEE, ACS, AIP and ASAE have confirmed their participation, together with science publications including Elsevier, Science, Nature and STM. Also joining the activities are prominent think tanks including China's State Council Development Research Center, Tsinghua University, the Chinese Academy of Sciences and China Development Research Foundation. Experts and scholars from Japan's JST will also share their insights during the activities.

To focus on "Northeast China Revitalization," domestic and foreign experts will discuss strategies to achieve this. Besides, over 200 university deans of big data and cloud computing will exchange views on cultivating digital economy talents.

There will also be eight academic forums on information technology, equipment manufacturing, modern agriculture, collaborative high-tech innovation, advanced materials, petroleum and petrochemical, intelligent manufacturing, and energy industry, all priority areas in northeast China's industrial transformation.

To provide targeted consultation for Heilongjiang during the annual meeting, CAST organized 10 investigations in northeast China led by academicians and experts whose findings will be presented in a meeting with Heilongjiang government officials.

For the "Talent Introduction and Cultivation" focus, the annual meeting has organized a series of activities, including a meeting between CAST President Wan Gang and students of the Northeast Forestry University and China-Russia exchanging activities of science popularization resources. Among participants of the activities are over 100 winners of the Science & Technology Award for Chinese Youth and young scholars from Hong Kong and Macao.

Other highlights will be the First International Green Dot Competition, a spatial planning and design contest involving the participation of a total of 416 teachers and students from 16 famous Chinese and foreign universities including Harvard University, and the China (Harbin) Overseas Talents Innovation and Entrepreneurship Contest, an event attracting 452 overseas innovation and entrepreneurship projects worldwide. The winning projects of the contest will be launched in Heilongjiang. Winners of the two competitions will receive awards at the annual meeting's closing ceremony.

There will also be two exhibitions on China's achievements in energy technology innovation since the founding of the People's Republic of China in 1949, as well as the country's achievements from its innovation and entrepreneurship drive in the past five years.
