More than 1,800 global leaders in politics, business, civil society, academia and the arts will gather in Dalian, Liaoning province next week for the Annual Meeting of the New Champions 2019. The participants, who are leaders in their respective fields, come from over 120 countries and regions around the world.

Known as the "Summer Davos," the event is part of the World Economic Forum, and is themed "Leadership 4.0: Succeeding in a New Era of Globalization." It is expected to bring together a record number of international participants, with 70% coming from outside Greater China, according to statistics released by the organizer during a press conference on Tuesday in the lead-up to the event.

"The number of representatives from the United States is only second to those from China," said Jin Guowei, vice mayor of Dalian, at the press conference. "Around 300 U.S. representatives are expected to attend the Dalian event, according to the list of attendees."

This is particularly noteworthy given the ongoing China-U.S. trade tensions, Jin said.

The Annual Meeting of the New Champions aims to be a truly open platform for fostering strategic cooperation between the next generation of leaders and those from diverse regions, countries and industries, said David Aikman, chief representative officer of the World Economic Forum's China Office.

Chinese Premier Li Keqiang is expected to attend the event and make a speech at the opening ceremony, according to a spokesperson at the press conference.
