Beijing China Tower Co., a communications tower manufacturer, has delivered over 5,000 5G base stations to three telecommunication operators in the Chinese capital as of Wednesday, according to the Beijing Communications Administration.

As the towers become operational, a number of high-usage areas in Beijing will begin receiving 5G coverage, including the capital's core urban areas, the stadiums and athletic fields of the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics, Beijing Horticultural Expo, and Daxing International Airport.

At the beginning of 2019, Beijing proposed to coordinate the five major application scenarios-driverless vehicles, healthcare, the industrial internet, smart city, and ultra-high definition video-with the city's five major projects, including the sub-center in Tongzhou district, Daxing International Airport, Beijing Horticultural Expo, 2022 Beijing Winter Olympic, and upgrading and renovation projects along Chang'an Street. The purpose is to achieve 5G network coverage of the capital's core areas, urban sub-centers, important functional areas, and important places. By building a high-end 5G industrial system, the city plans to push forward the capital's information technology industry to upgrade in an all-round way.

In order to vigorously develop the 5G industry and realize a large-scale 5G commercial deployment, infrastructure construction is a prerequisite. Thereby, Beijing Communications Administration is speeding up the layout of 5G infrastructure network and supporting the development of 5G industry and applications. Considering Beijing's size as a mega-city as well as the aspects of 5G network construction, the administration encourages the use of existing base stations, utilities, and all kinds of open sharing facilities to promote the co-construction and sharing of 5G base stations.

At present, Beijing Communications Administration is also working with the Beijing Municipal Commission of Urban Management to carry out pilot work of deploying different types of urban lamp poles, which can be used as 5G base stations.

The three major telecommunication operators in Beijing are also expanding cooperation with electric, railway, and other industries to promote the sharing and mutual opening of tower resources, which can be used in communications, monitoring, and traffic management.

Besides, it is also encouraging government administrations, public security units, transportation departments, and all other city authorities to share their tower resources. By doing that, the city aims to promote the co-construction, sharing and comprehensive utilization of all kinds of public infrastructure resources, improve construction efficiency, and reduce construction costs.

Nevertheless, the use of 5G requires 5G-capable products. To help people upgrade to 5G phones, Beijing's telecom companies are launching new product packages that include free upgrades from 4G devices.
