China for the first time successfully conducted the transmission of 8K ultra-high-definition (UHD) video via 5G network on Wednesday.

The 8K video signals were transmitted from the headquarters of the China Media Group (CMG) in Beijing to the venue of the Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2019 in Shanghai.

8K is a higher resolution standard than 4K, quadrupling the total number of pixels just like 4K did with 1080p. 8K is 7,680 by 4,320 resolution, or approximately 8,000 horizontal pixels.

Viewers at MWC were amazed by the extremely smooth video flow and extraordinary picture quality of the real-time live broadcasting, which were transmitted at the speed of 320Mb/s.

The task was carried out by the CMG together with telecom operators China Mobile, China Telecom, and Huawei.

5G, the next-generation mobile Internet connectivity, features much higher data speed, which is theoretically 100 times faster than 4G, lower latency and wider coverage.

Jiang Wenbo, a senior executive of the CMG, said that the successful test again proves that 5G networks offer reliable technological support to the application of UHD TV.

"The successful completion of the task made a very good attempt to the transformation of the entire media production process," said Wang Xiaoyun, general manager of the technology department of China Mobile.

But the application of 5G-based high speed UHD video transmission could be much wider.

Huang Luomeng, a senior executive at Huawei, said that the UHD video shot by drones and transmitted back in real-time could be used in many fields of public security and fire-fighting.

"For example, for drone inspection of oil pipelines, the problems can only be seen clearly when the video resolution is that high," he added.
