Cai Qi, secretary of the Beijing Municipal Committee of the CPC, visited Beijing's three top artificial intelligence companies on Thursday --SenseTime, MEGVII, and Cambricon. During his visit, Cai said the companies should fully leverage the development opportunities brought about by AI, accelerate key technology R&D, and expand application scenarios, so as to complete the AI industry ecosystem in Beijing. He emphasized that Beijing should take lead in China's AI development.

SenseTime has developed its algorithms, deep learning platform, and super-computing center as core technologies. After watching the demonstration of the company's technologies and products, Cai said SenseTime should benchmark itself against its counterparts that are leading companies elsewhere in the world.

He also spoke highly of the move that SenseTime has complied AI textbooks for middle and high school students, saying that education of AI should begin during a child's basic educations.

Megvii Technology Ltd, one of the world's top 100 AI startups, is currently working on an original AI operating system. Cai gave high praise to Megvii's vigor and innovation capabilities, and said the company should play an even more active role in the "Smart Beijing" initiative using its expertise.

Cambricon, a global leading company in the smart chip field, is the first Chinese company capable of making both smart terminals and cloud processors. After inspecting its latest technological achievements, Cai gave praise to the company's focus on R&D, and said its dedication is exactly the spirit of scientists that must be carried forward in the city's pursuit of new breakthroughs.

During the visits, Cai said AI is an important driving force of a new round of scientific and technological revolution and industrial transformation globally. He said Beijing must keep a close eye on the frontier of AI development and strengthen key core technologies, so as to give AI full play in the city's major goals-building a smart city, building an urban sub-center, hosting a technology-driven Winter Olympics, upgrading healthcare, etc.

Cai pointed out that AI and 5G represent the cornerstones for emerging industries, therefore the deep integration of the two shall inject new impetus into Beijing's high-quality development. Accordingly, the Party secretary inspected the fulfillment of "service package" provided by the municipal government to facilitate enterprises to do business in Beijing. He called for the government's continuous effort to improve business environment, implement the enterprise visiting mechanism, and quickly respond to requests for support.
