On July 19, the 10th Indian Ocean Island Games was held at the newly completed Multi-Sports Complex Center, which was funded by a number of countries including Mauritius and China. The construction project was contracted to China State Construction Engineering Corporation (CSCEC) and completed on July 15. With the help of the Chinese governments and builders from China, Mauritius now has its first international standard stadium and by far its largest sports center.

Mauritian Prime Minister Pravind Kumar Jugnauth, Deputy Prime Minister Ivan Collendavelloo, and other dignitaries attended the center’s inauguration ceremony on July 15. In his speech, Jugnauth thanked the Chinese government for its strong support and the Chinese Embassy in Mauritius for contributing to the smooth operations of the project. He mentioned that CSCEC, as the general contractor, has overcome many difficulties and challenges and completed the project with high quality.

After unveiling the Multi-Sports Complex Center, the prime minister also launched a swimming exhibition match at its water sports center and carried out the torch relay for the 10th Indian Ocean Island Games. The Games’ judo, swimming, and other competition events were hosted at the multi-sport stadium and the aquatic center.

The center consists of a multi-sport stadium, an aquatic center, as well as an indoor sports venue, with a total floor area of 32,000 square meters. Among these venues, the stadium and the aquatic center received financial assistance from the Chinese government as part of a pilot program supporting countries building their own projects.

Since the start of the project in October 2018, CSCEC’s construction team worked with unremitting efforts. With strong general contract management capabilities, it achieved a high-quality completion of the project in only eight months, recording the fastest construction speed among similar projects in Africa.
