Chinese shares end lower Monday

Major Chinese stock indices ended lower Monday, with the benchmark Shanghai Composite Index down 1.62 percent to 2,821.5 points.

The Shenzhen Component Index closed 1.66 percent lower at 8,984.73 points.

The combined turnover of stocks on the two exchanges stood at 416.16 billion yuan (about 60.12 billion U.S. dollars), shrinking from 454.9 billion yuan the previous trading day.

Losers outnumbered gainers by 1,188 to 237 on the Shanghai bourse and 1,701 to 406 in Shenzhen.

Stocks in gold and agriculture led the gains, while Shandong Gold Mining Co., Ltd. saw its share price rise by the daily 10-percent limit to 45.05 yuan a share.

Shares related to air transport, liquor and insurance led the losses.

The ChiNext Index, China's NASDAQ-style board of growth enterprises, lost 1.63 percent to close at 1,531.37 points.
