Shanghai issued a batch of Intelligent Connected Vehicle (ICV) application demonstration licenses Monday at the World Autonomous Vehicle Ecosystem Conference, allowing the commercial operation of ICVs in the city.

The conference was held by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology and the Municipal Government of Shanghai.

The Shanghai Municipal Commission of Economy and Information and Shanghai Municipal Transportation Commission jointly granted the licenses to three companies including Shanghai-based auto manufacturer SAIC Motor Corp.

Shanghai became the first Chinese city to issue such licenses, which allow authorized enterprises to carry out ICV demonstration applications in urban roads and expand the marketization and commercialization of ICVs.

According to the latest measures of ICV road tests and demonstration applications issued by Shanghai, up to 50 ICVs are allowed to start operation. It said the ultimate purpose of the development of the ICV industry is to benefit more people in the future.

Meanwhile, a smart transportation demonstration project of 5GAA (5G Automotive Association) was launched at the conference, with enterprises including carmakers and telecom companies.
