Political and business leaders on Thursday evening highlighted economic and trade cooperation between Chinese and American enterprises at a gathering in Houston in the U.S. state of Texas.

Around 100 officials and business executives of Chinese and American companies attended the annual meeting of the China General Chamber of Commerce-Houston (CGCC-Houston).

While delivering a speech, Chinese Consul General in Houston Cai Wei encouraged the CGCC-Houston and its member companies to continue to play a positive role in the development of China-U.S. relations.

"The China General Chamber of Commerce is effectively connecting their members, promoting the development of the China-U.S. economic and trade relations, and contributing to the overall interests of the bilateral diplomacy," he said.

The CGCC-Houston has grown steadily in the past year. With 13 new companies joining the branch, its total number of member companies has reached 92.

Cai gave full recognition to the work of the CGCC-Houston in facilitating exchanges between the two countries in recent years. He also encouraged the newly elected senior management team to promote greater development and turn the organization into a home for Chinese enterprises.

In addition, Cai put forward specific requirements and suggestions on the compliance operation and safety production for Chinese companies in the United States.

He also stressed China's consistent stand concerning China-U.S. trade issues.

"A peaceful and harmonious bilateral relationship between these two countries will make both winners, while a confrontational one will make both losers," Cai said, adding that a healthy China-U.S. relationship is also conducive to world peace and development.

Founded in 2005, the CGCC has been recognized as the largest and most influential non-profit organization representing Chinese enterprises in the United States. The CGCC-Houston covers eight southern states, including industries in energy, chemical, finance, information technology, trade and transportation, real estate and healthcare.
