The much anticipated Leeza SOHO, designed by Zaha Hadid Architects for real-estate developer SOHO China, opened its doors on Tuesday.

Construction of the 200-meter skyscraper took four years, and the building is the second architectural achievement designed by Zaha Hadid Architects to open this year in Beijing, following the unveiling of Daxing International Airport in September.

Pan Shiyi, chairman of SOHO China, Zhang Xin, CEO of SOHO China, Patrik Schumacher, principal of the architecture practice Zaha Hadid Architects, and Satoshi Ohashi, competition project director, attended the launch ceremony.

Pan delivered the opening speech and expressed his appreciation to multiple parties participating in the project, especially thanking the designers and the construction company, China Construction Eighth Engineering Division. Pan called the tower a result of collective wisdom and efforts. It is also the fourth joint project between SOHO China and Zaha Hadid Architects, with previous ones including Galaxy SOHO and Wangjing SOHO.

The twisting glass tower featuring world's tallest atrium at the height of 190 meters contains 172,800 square meters of office and residential space. As the tower rises, the atrium is twisted 45 degrees to align with a nearby major road ─ Lize Road.

Schumacher said the main idea in the architectural concepts is communication. The tower aims to break the barriers between floors, providing an open and inclusive public sphere for everyone, he said.

Lize Financial Business District is positioned as Beijing's second financial street after the famous Financial Street in downtown Beijing. Pan said a deciding factor for the tower's location is the ease of transportation, as the tower's atrium is directly connected to the new subway interchange station as well as the city's bus network on Lize Road and Luotuowan East Road. Five subway tunnels are under construction and will be accessible from the tower directly through its second underground floor, Pan added.

In addition, Leeza SOHO has full 5G coverage as another highlighted feature.
