In Peking Union Medical College Hospital, renowned ophthalmologist Chen Youxin successfully finished a targeted navigation laser surgery on a patient who was thousands of miles away from Beijing, with the aid of 5G-powered telemedicine equipment; In Fangshan district, a driver sitting in a lab turned a steering wheel to left, and a few kilometers away a vehicle turned left with 5G-powered remote control.

The power of 5G to change the world and create the future is the theme of the 2019 World 5G Convention, which is under way in Beijing. The inaugural convention is described as "international, high-end, and professional," bringing together nearly 100 of the world's most influential scientists in the information and communication field. Representatives from over 30 world-leading 5G enterprises such as Huawei, Qualcomm, BOE, and Chipone Technology attended the convention to promote collaborative innovation of 5G and speed up its applications.

Infrastructure, networks, and policies play vital roles in 5G development. As of October this year, China's three major communications operators have constructed 11,000 5G base stations in Beijing, with 3,000 more expected by the end of 2019. The network of base stations would provide continuous 5G coverage to areas within Beijing's Fifth Ring Road.

An official of the Beijing Municipal Bureau of Economy and Information Technology said that Beijing is leading the nation's 5G development, with an expected revenue of over 100 billion yuan (US$14.2 billion) from 5G-related device manufacturing in the next three years, and even more from software and services. "5G industry is taking shape in Beijing with some results being achieved already."

According to the official, five types of 5G application scenarios are in the stage of demonstration and testing: smart transportation, smart healthcare, smart city, industrial internet, and ultra-HD video. Meanwhile, Beijing is promoting these 5G applications in the five major projects and major events in Beijing: Beijing sub-center, Daxing International Airport, Beijing 2019 Expo, 2022 Winter Olympics, and the upgrade project of Chang'an Street.
