The construction of the Manado-Bitung Toll Road (Section 2) in North Sulawesi, Indonesia, was recently completed. It is the first toll road in the province, and also a key project of Indonesia’s economic corridors.

The much-anticipated project was contracted by CSCEC Road and Bridge Group, a subsidiary of China State Construction Engineering Corporation (CSCEC). It was funded through a concessionary loan from the Export-Import Bank of China, and is a key project of the Belt and Road Initiative.

Indonesian President Joko Widodo and other high-ranking officials paid inspection visits to the project during construction. To accelerate the work, the project introduced techniques from China, which received high praise from Indian engineers.

A 7.7-magnitude earthquake hit Sulawesi of Indonesia on Sept. 28, 2018, triggering a tsunami hours after a series of tremors. The project participants donated 500 million rupiah (over US$30,000) and shipped emergency supplies to the affected area.
