Beijing sees 1.27 trillion-yuan-increase in its new economy

According to preliminary statistics from the Beijing Municipal Bureau of Statistics, the value of the new economy in Beijing increased by 1.27 trillion yuan in 2019, 7.5% higher than the previous year based on the current price level. This figure accounted for 36.1% of Beijing's total GDP, up by 0.2 percentage points over last year.

In 2019, among the industries above the designated size in Beijing, high-tech manufacturing and strategic emerging industries saw an increased value of 9.3% and 5.5% (based on the comparable price), which are 6.2 and 2.4 percentage points higher than the average growth. They contributed to 74.7% and 58.9% of the overall growth of industries above the designated size (with overlaps between these two).

Meanwhile, new generation IT, AI and new material industries also saw steady growth last year. The output of GPS receivers increased by 26.3%, while smart TV and intelligent consumer equipment manufacturing output increased by 13.3% and 24.7% respectively.

In terms of the service industry, from last January to November, financial industries above the designated size, information transmission, software and IT service industries, as well as scientific research and technology entities shared 36.6% of the total revenue of the overall tertiary industry. This marked an increase of 3.6 percentage points year-over-year. 

Also, from last January to November, the revenue of legal entities of high-tech service industries and modern service industries above the designated size increased by 10% and 8.2% year-on-year. This was 4.7 and 2.9 percentage points higher than the overall growth rate of the service industry.

Due to the impact of the COVID-19, the "home-based economy" boomed during the Spring Festival, and the number of users of online video platforms and online games soared. According to statistics from Douyin, the Chinese version of TikTok, a total of 3.94 million video clips on how to stay safe during the outbreak were uploaded by users in China. The movie Lost in Russia was played 600 million times within three days after it was released on online video platforms such as Douyin and IXigua.com.

According to the Beijing Municipal Bureau of Statistics, the revenue of "culture plus Internet" industries reached 487.85 billion yuan from last January to November. This marks a 22.1% increase year-over-year, which is 13.8 percentage points higher than the overall growth rate of Beijing's cultural industry. The revenue also accounts for 43.8% of the total revenue of Beijing's cultural industry, up by 4.9 percentage points year-over-year.

In addition, online consumption also showed a promising trend. In 2019 the online sales of wholesale and retail businesses above the designated size in Beijing reached 336.63 billion yuan, up by 23.6% from the previous year. This accounted for 27.4% of the total sales volume, 5 percentage points higher than the previous year. Hotel and catering businesses above the designated size achieved a sales volume of 14.1 billion yuan through public networks. This marks a 12.2% increase from the previous year, contributing to 40.9% of the increase in meal revenues in Beijing.
