On Feb. 28, 3,411 tons of structural steel components urgently needed in the Central Business District (CBD) project in Egypt's new administrative capital arrived at the Port of Ain Sokhna, Egypt. Having been dispatched, gated-in, and loaded under the circumstances of the COVID-19 outbreak and the shutdown of land transportation, this bulk of construction components set off from China during the Spring Festival and traveled by sea for 28 days to Egypt. Then, within two days, those steel components were transported by land to the construction site, which was the first shipment of key materials that arrived after the Chinese New Year for the CBD project.

For this project, 70% of its construction materials have been purchased locally. Still, core components such as the steel components had to be imported from China, making it critical that the transportation within the maritime supply chain continues to be smooth under the circumstances of the outbreak. With the assistance of the project owner and the project supervisor, as well as the support of the Sokhna customs and the port authority in Egypt, the Chinese freight forwarder coordinated relevant parties to speed up the customs clearance and inspection procedures, and the shipment of the heavy-duty and ultra-thick structuralsteel arrived earlier than expected.

Wei Jianxun is the executive general manager of the CBD Iconic Tower project of China State Construction Engineering Corporation Egypt. He said, "The arrival of these large-size materials not only ensures the orderly construction of the Iconic Tower, but also boosts the morale of the project staff to both battle COVID-19 and accomplish the project." He expressed his appreciation to all parties involved in the delivery of the materials for the support and assistance.
