Foreign companies in Beijing have resumed 70% of their work, according to the Beijing Municipal Commerce Bureau. Among them, key foreign companies with investment contract worth over US$100 million have achieved 97.4% of work resumption rate. All major companies in Beijing's CBD have resumed operations, the bureau said Tuesday.

Of the 308 key foreign companies, 79 are manufacturers and all of them have resumed operation; 229 are service providers, and 221 have resumed work. The eight real estate companies that have not resumed work are unable to do so due to sales cycle and project construction approval issues.

Chaoyang district is where the headquarters of most foreign enterprises in Beijing are located, and 99% of the office buildings have resumed work, especially in Beijing's CBD as all of its major companies have come back to work. Moreover, 218 foreign companies above the designated size in Beijing Economic Technological Development Area have returned to work, and epidemic-control-related and essential manufacturing and medication research institutes have reached 95% of work resumption rate.

In addition, foreign-funded supermarkets and chain stores, such as Walmart, Carrefour, New World, McDonald's, and 7-Eleven have kept their doors open. For instance, 97% of Beijing's 7-Elevens remained open throughout the coronavirus outbreak. The chain store ensured adequate supply of goods even as the demand increased sharply during that time.

Ito-Yokado Beijing, as the first foreign chain retail store approved by the State Council, increased supplies such as instant noodles and facial masks for residents. It also offered online purchase services for its customers amid the coronavirus outbreak.

As the epidemic becomes effectively contained, Beijing's foreign companies are expected to return to operations at a faster speed, the commerce bureau said.
