Guangzhou, the capital of south China's Guangdong Province, on Wednesday launched a bus lane pilot covered by 5G signals, providing passengers with a better travel experience.

Bus route B27, which has a total of 22 full electric buses in operation, is 17.4 km long and connects Tianhe District with Huangpu District. The vehicles are equipped with facilities including 5G coverage equipment, passenger flow monitoring, intelligent dispatching and driving safety assistance devices.

The 5G-covered intelligent dispatching system can increase the bus dispatching efficiency and save an estimated 10 percent of transport capacity based on the real-time data related to the passenger flow and road conditions, said Zhang Zhigang from a subsidiary of Guangzhou Public Transport.

The bus lane pilot is part of Guangzhou's Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system, which has been fully covered by 5G signals.

A total of 50 5G base stations have been set up along the BRT routes. Citizens can figure out the best bus stop to go to and find out the bus' estimated time of arrival by checking the information on an app, according to the Guangzhou Municipal Transportation Bureau.

China is adopting the 5G network to meet public demand in sectors such as transportation, entertainment and health care. In late 2019, Chengdu, capital of southwest China's Sichuan Province, also put the city's first 5G-covered bus into service.
