Mercedes-Benz plants worldwide would reach CO2 neutrality by 2022, the German car manufacturer announced on Monday.

The previous target had only covered plants of Mercedes-Benz in Europe. Now, all of the more than 30 car and van plants and also global battery production should reach the goal by 2022, according to the company.

"We are looking at the entire value chain, from the supplier network and production to the product itself," said Ola Kaellenius, chairman of the board of management of Daimler and Mercedes-Benz.

In a first step towards carbon neutral production, emissions that occurred in vehicle production and in the energy supply of plants would be "systematically reduced" or "avoided entirely" wherever possible, according to the car manufacturer.

To realize the transition, Mercedes-Benz would continue to improve its energy efficiency, increase the use of green electricity and achieve a sustainable heat supply for their production facilities, it announced.
