Zhongguancun Science City opened 52 roads recently for the testing of autonomous vehicles to push the speedy development of self-driving technology, local authorities said.

The roads totaling 215.3 km are part of a demonstration area for self-driving vehicles. They spread over 100 square km in the northern region of Zhongguancun Science City.

Autonomous vehicles with testing permits can carry out testing in these roads from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., according to the authorities. The newly opened roads will meet autonomous driving companies' needs and help accelerate 5G+autonomous driving, said an industry insider.

Zhongguancun Science City opened three roads for testing autonomous driving in 2019, totaling 19.4 km.

In the future, the driverless demonstration area will build more infrastructure in autonomous driving, precision maps, smart transportation, etc., to build up an innovation ecosystem featuring vehicles, roads, "cloud," the internet, and maps. The related industry  could be worth 50 billion yuan in three years, according to the Zhongguancun Science City.
