The construction of an Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) project in western Zhongguancun Science City will be completed by the end of this December, making the area a showroom for smart transport.

The news was announced yesterday during a press conference on the integrated transportation management in Beijing's Haidian district for 2020.

Located in central Haidian, the western region of Zhongguancun Science City sprawls over 0.946 square kilometers and contains 20 roads. Despite its extensive transport network, relevant infrastructure and maintenance capabilities are yet to be developed.

"In view of the limited traditional methods for road reconstruction and expansion, we have decided to adopt an integrated plan combining both traditional and smart traffic management," explained an official from the Haidian District Commission of Urban Management. The new ITS network will cover not only western Zhongguancun, but also 24 crossroads and five roads nearby.

The project will improve infrastructure facilities, optimize traffic flow, strengthen technological support, and build management capacities. The ITS network will also provide multiple services, including visual traffic directing, smart traffic organization, and full-coverage big data collection.

The ITS network will consist of a smart traffic command center and two projects concerning infrastructure and technology. The incidence of traffic violations and traffic congestion are expected to decrease once the project is completed.

Under the new ITS network, the duration of traffic lights will be adjusted in real time according to the traffic flow. The network will also help improve the efficiency of relevant government bodies and traffic departments. In addition, the huge amount of traffic data collected under the ITS network will act as a reference during the government's decision-making process.
