Fueled by innovation-driven economy, Changping district recorded a 3% yearly increase in GDP, reaching 51.06 billion yuan (US$7.32 billion) in the first half of this year, and leading GDP growth among districts in Beijing.

The district's growth rate was 9.5 percentage points higher than that in the previous quarter despite strong economic headwinds, statistics showed.

During the period, its output value of industrial enterprises above designated size reached 65.64 billion yuan, with a year-on-year increase of 17.5%. Meanwhile, its industrial output above designated size grew 17.5%, outperforming other districts.

The Beijing Future Science City located in Changping is one of the driving forces behind the district's strong economic performance.

Despite the impact of COVID-19, companies and institutions in the Beijing Future Science City have actively resumed business and operations to meet production targets and maintain efficiency. Construction of China's first international research-oriented hospital began in its "Life Valley" area, taking only 124 days to compete the contract signing, location selection, design, planning and construction inauguration.

Leading businesses in Changping continue to grow quickly. COVID-19 antibody test kits developed by Lepu Medical Co., Ltd during the epidemic period have been exported to the U.K., Italy, Spain, Hungary and Portugal, earning 400 million yuan in revenue. By the end of June, the company had ramped up its monthly output to 8 million test kits.

The Changping district government has kept track of companies in the district and helped them address difficulties associated with the resumption of production. For example, it offered to help coordinate to solve issues involving transportation logistics, production support, and export declarations for 10 enterprises including Foton Motor's company in the district.

The district government has also built a financial service platform for small- and micro-sized businesses. So far, 1,583 companies have signed-up, with the platform helping them save nearly 40 million yuan in rent.

According to the district's plan, Changping will focus on the development of "two valleys and one park" in the Future Science City, inject fresh impetus into open and sharing innovation, strengthen its two leading industries of pharmaceutical health and energy, and vigorously develop both its advanced manufacturing industry and scientific and technological service industry.
