Five swivel bridges on the second horizontal line of the Chongqing Expressway Project have completed synchronous rotation and docking in Chongqing on the early morning of Aug. 21, setting a series of new world records in the construction of complex projects. With a total weight of 21,500 metric tons, the five bridges span some 383.5 meters over three railway tracks, and the successful docking of these bridges has laid a solid foundation for the scheduled completion of the whole second horizontal line.

The second horizontal line of the Chongqing Expressway is a major infrastructure improvement project in the city. The project was initiated by the Chongqing Municipal Commission of Housing and Urban-Rural Development, and was invested and constructed by subsidiaries of China State Construction Engineering Corporation (CSCEC). The total length of the project is about 14.4 kilometers, and the entire line needs to cross over 10 railway tracks. In order to ensure the normal operation of the railway, CSCEC has continuously worked with the project designer and the railway authorities on the construction plan, and all parties have reached an agreement that the five bridges are built paralleled to the railway tracks and then rotate simultaneously to finish docking. The whole process must be completed within 90 minutes — a narrow time window due to the busy railway traffic.

"The simultaneous rotation of five bridges has set some new records, including the largest number of swivel bridges in a large-span cluster and rotation of the heaviest structure," said Xiang Zhongfu, vice president of Chongqing Bridge Association and a professor at Chongqing Jiaotong University.

The second horizontal line of Chongqing Expressway is expected to be completed and opened to traffic before the end of 2021. This project is of great significance for improving the expressway network in Chongqing and helping the construction of the Chengdu-Chongqing dual-city economic zone.
