Honda Motor (China) Investment Co. and GAC Honda Automobile Co. will recall 16,304 vehicles from the Chinese market due to defective airbag inflators, according to the country's top quality watchdog.

The recall, set to begin on Sept. 14, will involve 5,918 imported Accord, CRV, Legend, Logo and Odyssey models manufactured between March 17, 1997 and Dec. 14, 1999, as well as 10,386 domestically-produced Accord sedans, said a statement on the website of the State Administration for Market Regulation.

Front airbag inflators on the driver's side of the recalled vehicles were manufactured with non-azide propellant. The chemical can deteriorate when exposed to high temperatures and humidity, causing airbags to fail to deploy normally or sending shrapnel into the passenger compartment, the statement said.

The auto companies promised to check all the affected vehicles and replace defective airbag inflators free.
