An unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) innovation base was inaugurated yesterday in Zhongguancun Yanqing Park, located in northwestern Beijing's Yanqing district. The base is designed to form a whole industrial chain of UAV manufacturing, R&D, quality testing and demonstration applications.

Six drone enterprises signed agreements to operate in the base; Yanqing already has a total of 43 drone enterprises.

"Yanqing has a drone flying area of 374 square kilometers, which offers convenience for drone enterprises in the base," said Jing Tiejun, an official with Zhongguancun Yanqing Park. "We also have a brainpower and resource pool from Beijing's renowned universities and research institutes including Tsinghua University and Beihang University to back up the industry, in addition to our special policy and funding support."

Yanqing's drones have been applied to such purposes as aerial photography, river cruising, firefighting, 3D modeling, agriculture and monitoring various emergencies. Jing said the UAV innovation base will provide technological support to the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics as Yanqing is one of the three venues for the Games.

On the same day the unmanned system test center of the E-Valley of Zhongguancun and a test and experiment base of low-altitude safety research center of the People's Public Security University of China were also launched at Yanqing's UAV innovation base, which will serve as platforms of investment and financing, safety test, assessment and certification services.

According to Wang Yingxun, professor of Beihang University and president of Beihang Unmanned System Research Institute, China so far has 2,370 drone enterprises; however, the potential of the market is yet to be unleashed as China is now working related standardization for the industry.
