The Zhongguancun 5G-Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) Innovation Competition concluded in Beijing's northwestern Yanqing district yesterday, in an aim to boost integration between 5G and the drone industry.

"5G technology can definitely propel the development of the drone industry, and especially the application of drones in emergency situations, thanks to 5G's ultra-reliable low latency communication and enhanced mobile broadband," said Zhou Mingyu, research director at Baicells Technologies, whose team won second prize in the competition.

The competition involved the innovative application of 5G in virtual reality, high-definition video, intelligent transportation, UAVs and smart healthcare. Meanwhile, it focused on the use of UAVs in emergency telecommunication and rescue, as well as providing support for large-scale events such as the 2022 Winter Olympics.

The drone industry is one of the four pillar industries in Yanqing, with the district among the first batch of 13 unmanned civil aviation experimental zones approved by the Civil Aviation Administration of China at the end of October. The new zones are designed to offer airspace for testing innovative drone applications and facilitate the process of developing drone businesses.

China is home to many drone manufacturers, including the global leader DJI.
