The 2020 World Industrial Design Conference opened on Wednesday in the city of Yantai, east China's Shandong Province, showcasing over 1,000 pieces of innovative works.

Aimed at promoting the deep integration of industrial design with economic and social development, the event attracted design organizations, companies, and colleges from over 40 countries to discuss ways to boost cooperation worldwide.

In the current stage of Industry 4.0, the industrial value chain has been transforming fundamentally, adding intelligence, data, and more and more AI, and only industrial design can transform these into systems that are understandable and easy to use, said Lutz Dietzold, CEO of the German Design Council, while addressing the opening ceremony through a video link.

"The World Industrial Design Conference is an important platform for international exchange and cooperation among stakeholders in industrial design," said Li Yong, director-general of the UN Industrial Development Organization.

"It can play a crucial role, particularly under the current circumstances where global collaboration is key to economic recovery," Li also said through a video link.

The event, to last till Nov. 29, is taking place both online and offline, with 100 parallel sessions worldwide to promote dialogues and concrete cooperation.
