Consumer activities in Beijing remained upbeat during the Spring Festival holiday as people stayed put for the festival.

According to statistics from the municipal commerce bureau, the 100 businesses it closely monitored had registered sales of 5.47 billion yuan (US$850 million), up by 43.1% over the same period in 2020, and 15.5% more than in 2019.

To meet consumer demand, 2,066 restaurants above the designated size remained open during the holiday, and 90% of the staff at chain grocery stores stayed at their posts. Over 80% of the businesses at the Xinfadi Market - Beijing's largest wholesale market for fruits, vegetables, and meat - stayed in business during the seven-day holiday.

Before the holiday, Beijing issued residents 40 million yuan worth of shopping coupons to boost spending. During the holiday, business sales of major shopping zones including Xidan Department Store, Capital Outlets, and Wangfujing Department Store grew by five times year over year.

According to third party statistics, the city's 22 major commercial areas saw 90% year-on-year growth in daily average visitors.

The number of orders and sales of food delivery services both grew by over 1.8 times during the holiday.
