In 2020, 76,000 new technology-based enterprises were established in Beijing, an increase of nearly 10,000 over the previous year and accounting for 40.7% of all new enterprises founded in the capital throughout the year.

Additionally, Beijing's 2020 new economy added value reached 1,365.4 billion yuan, making up 37.8% of the region's GDP, the Beijing Municipal Statistics Bureau said Wednesday.

Last year, as Beijing strived to coordinate the promotion of epidemic prevention and control as well as economic and social development, its new economy enjoyed impressive growth. New enterprises characterized by innovation in the digital and information economic sectors, new industries, and new formats all sprung up.

Among them, high-end industries saw the highest rate of recovery. In 2020, among the industries above designated size in Beijing, the added value of high-tech manufacturing and strategic emerging industries increased by 9.5% and 9.2% year-on-year, respectively, which was higher than average. Among the service industries above designated size, the revenue of high-tech businesses increased by 9.8% year-on-year, also higher than average in the service industry. Among them, information technology services increased by 15.5% year-on-year, while digital content and related services increased by 21.1%.

The COVID-19 pandemic has ushered in unexpected opportunities for new types of consumption, which are driven by online consumption and deeper integration of online and offline sales platforms. In 2020, online retail sales in wholesale, retail, accommodation, and catering industries above designated size in Beijing increased by 30.1% year-on-year, accounting for 32.2% of the total retail sales of consumer goods. This marks an increase of 7 percentage points from the previous year.

A new health service model centered around "Internet + Medical treatment + Medicine" has also gradually formed. The transaction volume via key medical platforms was 2.9 times that of 2019, and the transaction volume on internet education platforms was 2.1 times.

Beijing's new infrastructure construction transformation and upgrading pace have also accelerated. The expedited construction of 5G, internet of vehicles, and autonomous driving systems have promoted cross-industry and cross-field innovation and sped up digital transformation.

The Beijing Municipal Statistics Bureau added that since the outbreak of the pandemic, Beijing's scientific and technological innovation has gained new momentum. As such, new scientific and technological products such as detection reagents, vaccines, intelligent thermometers, and AI products for diagnosis and treatments, have played their role in the fight against the pandemic.
