Hot pot is an iconic local food and even a way of life in Chongqing municipality and its neighboring Sichuan province, where hot pot restaurants can be found everywhere. The dish brings family and friends together around a boiling and spicy pot, where they can cook and eat meats and vegetables in an instant, all the while chatting and having fun.

"Hot pot is such a specialty in Chongqing that we need a lot of raw materials to support the industry such as various meats and animal internal organs, but the domestic supply cannot meet our demands," said Yang Fei, vice head of management committee of Chongqing Fuling Comprehensive Bonded Zone, one of the five boned zones in Chongqing. "So we have communicated with the Belt and Road countries, including some Central Asian countries, as they have plenty of supplies. Then we talked to some key Chinese companies in Chongqing and formed a vision."

According to the Chongqing Municipal Commission of Commerce, the development of the Chongqing hot pot industry has entered the "fast lane." There are nearly 30,000 hot pot restaurants in the city, with an annual operating income of nearly 60 billion yuan and total revenue for the entire hot pot industry exceeding 100 billion yuan, with nearly 600,000 people engaging in the business.

Yang said the bonded zone plans to build a bonded distribution and processing base for Chongqing hot pot ingredients and raw materials so that such goods from the Belt and Road countries as well as seafood from Southeast Asia can be imported into the bonded zone. Those countries can enjoy preferential policies for getting their items cut, packaged, or further processed here before distributing them to Chongqing or other places in southwest China.

By doing so, Yang said that the bonded zone will be different from other bonded zones.

Chongqing Fuling Comprehensive Bonded Zone was completed and started independent customs operations on Dec. 27, 2019. The zone enjoys geographical advantages thanks to Chongqing's position at the intersection of the Belt and Road and the Yangtze River Economic Belt. In terms of water transport, the bonded zone is adjacent to the Yangtze River known as the "golden waterway," and faces Longtou Port — Chongqing's main port — across the river. As for road and railway transport, the bonded zone features three expressways and three railway logistics channels nearby.
