Beijing's consumption picks up over Dragon Boat Festival holiday

Beijing's consumption market saw a significant surge during the three-day Dragon Boat Festival holiday thanks to a series of shopping events amid its ongoing consumption promotion season.

According to the Beijing Municipal Commerce Bureau, sales revenue of the city's 100 key retailers, restaurants, and e-commerce firms amounted to 3.15 billion yuan during the holiday, up 29.5% year on year. Additionally, sales among the city's major department stores increased by more than 250% year on year.

Many major enterprises in the city, such as JD.com and Gome Electrical Appliance, issued coupons to benefit consumers both online and offline. For example, JD.com offered 10% off coupons on mobile phones. The company's online sales revenue registered over 80% growth among digital appliances, alcoholic beverages, skincare products, and electrical appliances.

The Beijing branch of the Industrial and Commercial Bank of China (ICBC) also issued 320 million vouchers to citizens.

To bolster the capital's nighttime economy, Beijing's business districts launched a series of sales promotion events via outdoor movie screenings, food and music festivals, and online influencer performances. According to Union Pay's big data platform, Beijing's nighttime consumption saw a 21.3% growth year on year, while consumer foot traffic in key business districts has increased by more than 40%.

Sales in the city's catering industry also picked up significantly during the holiday, with more than 60 kinds of flavored zongzi introduced to the market. Revenue within the catering industry saw an increase of 1.3 times year on year, including twice the amount of in-store dining compared to last year.
