From January to November, Beijing's consumption sector has expanded 13.1% year on year. Its service consumption and retail sales of consumer goods went up by 15.5% and 10.4% respectively, signaling a good start for the capital as it transforms itself into an international consumption center city.

Since the ambitious plan was first put forward in January, Beijing has been renovating its shopping malls, developing a "first-store" economy and introducing business outlets that offer residents more convenience.

According to the Beijing Municipal Commerce Bureau, the city finished renovating 17 traditional malls this year, such as Cuiwei Department Store and WDK Shopping Center, by improving their consumer environments and introducing additional business models.

The city's "first-store" economy has also become a new driver of local consumption. Official data shows that a total of 696 "first stores" were opened in Beijing during the first three quarters of the year, 3.8 times the total amount of last year. With 22 business circles completing renovations, the number of these stores are expected to reach about 890 by the end of this year.

In addition, Beijing has been working to improve the coverage of business outlets offering more convenience for daily necessities. Currently, there are more than 90,000 such business outlets across the city, covering eight categories such as vegetable retail sales, convenience stores, breakfast restaurants and housekeeping services. The average number of convenience stores and neighborhood-based markets per million people has increased from 282 last year to 310.

Regarding next year's plans, the city's commerce bureau will improve or develop 410 such business outlets, and ramp up efforts to digitize its life services sector which includes catering, vegetable retail sales and the beauty industry.
