The three large activities for testing digital renminbi (RMB) held in Beijing in 2021 achieved the total transaction of 9.6 billion yuan, covering 403,000 application scenarios, the Operations Office of the People's Bank of China announced at its work conference on Monday.

In February 2021, Beijing rolled out the first digital RMB pilot event, providing 50,000 digital currency envelopes with 200 yuan each. People could use the digital envelopes on winter sports-related consumption.

In June 2021, another digital RMB pilot program was held, through which 500,000 people received 200-yuan prizes. They could spend the money at nearly 2,000 designated merchants in Beijing.

The third digital RMB pilot activity held in December 2021 covered payment scenarios where people paid small amounts of money in high frequency, such as for buses, subways, shops, bookstores, and so on.

The digital RMB pilot programs for the Winter Olympics covered seven major application scenarios, including transportation, catering, shopping, tourism, healthcare, communications, and ticketing and entertainment.
