Beijing is gearing up for an industrial agglomeration to develop its hydrogen energy sector in a bid to becoming a world-class city advanced in hydrogen energy research and application, according to Peng Xuehai, deputy director of the Beijing Municipal Bureau of Economy and Information Technology.

A demonstration zone for key technology research and innovation in the hydrogen energy industry will be built in the northern part of the city, with the Energy Valley in Changping district as the core area. The districts of Haidian, Yanqing, and Huairou will also be involved.

More efforts will be made to improve the overall industrial chain and boost its core competitiveness. State-owned enterprises will also get more support in order to accelerate the transformation of its research abilities.

In the city's south, the policy aims to foster a demonstration zone for high-end hydrogen energy equipment manufacturing and application, covering the districts of Daxing, Fangshan, and the Beijing Economic and Technological Development Area.

The northern part of the Daxing International Hydrogen Energy Demonstration Zone is already in operation, and more than 300 programs have been contracted.

Around 30 enterprises have settled in the hydrogen energy industrial parks in Haidian's Zhongguancun and Fangshan areas, with hydrogen production reaching seven tons a day.

Programs on the research and development of hydrogen fuel cells have been introduced to the Beijing Economic and Technological Development Area, said Peng, adding that a slew of enterprises dedicated to innovation in the hydrogen energy industry have been attracted to move to the research zone.

Seeing the hosting of the Beijing 2022 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games as an opportunity for growth, Yanqing, a competition zone, has accumulated abundant experience in fuel cell vehicle operation and hydrogen energy supply.

Peng pointed out that Beijing is joining hands with the nearby city of Tianjin and Hebei province to build a whole industrial chain to promote the development of the hydrogen energy industry, believing that it will contribute to the energy mix upgrading and reaching peak carbon emissions in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region.
