Beijing's number of patents per 10,000 people reached 185 at the end of 2021, ranking first in China, according to a municipal press conference on intellectual property rights on Thursday.

Beijing has also formulated the first international standard for intellectual property management, said Pan Xinsheng, deputy director of the city's municipal intellectual property office.

"The Global Innovation Index 2021" released by the World Intellectual Property Organization reveals that Beijing ranked third in terms of top science and technology cluster of each economy or cross-border region.

A total of 405,000 valid patents and 2,579,000 valid trademarks were registered in Beijing as of the end of 2021, said Pan.

As the world's first dual-Olympic city, Beijing has attached great importance to the high-level protection of Olympic intellectual property rights, severely cracking down on various kinds of malicious squatting acts and actively establishing whitelists of relevant subjects. These are all continuing efforts to protect Olympic intellectual properties in a comprehensive way even after the conclusion of events, Pan said.

In addition, as part of its efforts to inspire innovation, a new set of Beijing Intellectual Property Rights Protection Regulations was passed during the city's legislative session in March, and it will come into effect on July 1.
