The 2022 World New Energy Vehicle Congress (WNEVC) will be held in Hainan province on August 25-28, according to a press conference in Beijing Thursday.

With a focus on full electrification and global cooperation in the context of pursuing carbon neutrality, the event is expected to further promote low-carbon trends in the auto industry and accelerate the industry's transformation and upgrading with more technological advances.

Accelerating technological innovation in the new energy vehicles (NEVs) sector is a major effort of the auto industry to cope with climate change and achieve transformation and upgrading, as announced at the press conference by Liu Xingping, an official of the China Association for Science and Technology, one of the hosts of the congress.

Some 1,500 representatives of government, industry, universities, and research institutes from around the world will attend 24 plenary sessions, thematic forums, technical seminars, and closed-door meetings of the congress, which will cover a wide range of topics. Those will include the role of electric mobility in achieving carbon neutrality, international cooperation on the development of NEVs, the industry ecology of autonomous driving and future mobility, and the future of advanced manufacturing technology and NEV green supply chains.

Germany returns as the guest of honor at this year's event, and international organizations, including the Clean Energy Ministerial (CEM), the UN Environment Programme (UNEP), the International Energy Agency (IEA), and the Electric Vehicles Initiative (EVI) have been invited to be supporters of the congress.

The 2022 event will also feature an exhibition of the latest NEV technologies in a 12,000 sqm exhibition area. Over 60 enterprises involved in the development of complete vehicles and spare parts are also expected to showcase their technologies and products at the exhibition.

Moreover, the event will announce the results of its selections for the 2022 Global NEV Cutting-edge and Innovative Technologies.

Inaugurated in 2019, WNEVC represents China's effort to strengthen green and low-carbon global cooperation and promote exchanges, the integration of the industry chain, and accelerate marketization in the NEV sector.

Latest data show that China's NEVs sales topped 11.08 million units at the end of May of this year, compared to only 20,000 units at the end of 2012.

Globally, the country has ranked first in terms of NEV production and sales for seven straight years since 2015, leading efforts in transforming the global auto industry.
