China will step up its regulations on overpackaging in a bid to facilitate a green shift in production and lifestyle, according to a notice released by the State Council.

A string of requirements have been made on links including production, sales, delivery and recycling to stem overpackaging, said the notice.

By 2025, overpackaging in major monitored commodities like mooncakes and tea will be under effective control, it said.

Packaging innovation will be encouraged to promote green packaging solutions, while supervision will be enhanced on e-commerce, courier and food delivery services.

The notice also encouraged the development or modification of local regulations on overpackaging as well as the improvement of related standards.
