The development of Beijing's self-driving vehicles has entered a new stage as Baidu Inc and Pony.ai were granted permits to test vehicles without a safety operator sitting in the front seat in the Chinese capital.

The stage marks the second of the three phrases of self-driving vehicle tests, according to the rules released in October 2021. The previous phase was conducting tests with passengers in front seats, while the last phrase will be remote control without passengers in the vehicle.

After obtaining the permission of the second test phase, 10 self-driving vehicles of Pony.ai will start a new round of test on a 60-square meter core zone, covering multiple complex urban road scenarios in the Beijing Economic and Technological Development Area.

Self-driving vehicles have gradually become part of people's daily lives in the area, according to Pony.ai. A person at the company said that, compared to the previous tests, new forms of tests will be helpful for enterprises to give more objective evaluation of the functions of vehicles and obtain real and complete performance data.
