Beijing plans to upgrade 54 commercial areas and build two to three world-class shopping areas with a scale of 100 billion yuan (US$14.14 billion) each by 2025, as part of its efforts to become an international consumption hub, according to an action plan released by the city's commerce bureau on Wednesday.
Beijing started to upgrade its traditional commercial circles since 2019. Since then, it has completed the renovation of 22 iconic shopping areas across the city, including Wangfujing and Sanlitun.
According to the latest plan, Beijing will introduce international standards to its commercial areas to raise their global popularity. Next year, the city will promote the Joy City project in western Beijing and upgrade Chongwenmen, among others.
Beijing also plans to build two or three 100-billion-yuan shopping areas by 2025. According to the plan, Wangfujing will become a world-class pedestrian commercial area with unique cultural charms; Xidan Financial Street will be built into a fashion consumption center; Qianmen-Dashilanr will be transformed into a pedestrian street integrating time-honored brands with traditional and modern Chinese culture.
The upgraded commercial areas will be fully covered by 5G and wireless networks and equipped with smart consumption ecosystems, including navigation and guidance, digital landscape display, digital immersive experience, and smart parking.
