Editor's note: Unlike the city-level GDP rankings, which have seen a reshuffle, the list of top 10 domestic provincial regions by GDP in 2022 has remained essentially unchanged compared with the previous year, with the only difference being Anhui overtaking Shanghai to take tenth place.

Specifically, Guangdong, Jiangsu and Shandong provinces once again led the list with GDPs of 12.9 trillion yuan, 12.3 trillion yuan and 8.7 trillion yuan, respectively. However, the gap between the top two provinces further narrowed from 800.5 billion yuan in 2021 to 624.3 billion yuan last year. Guangdong secured the top-ranking place for the 34th year, and the GDP of second-placed Jiangsu grew 2.8% year on year and exceeded the 12-trillion-yuan threshold for the first time in 2022, accounting for 10.2% of the nation's economic size.

Fujian, which ranked 8th on the list, has demonstrated the fastest economic growth rate across the nation in 2022. Together with Jiangxi, which ranked 15th on the list, the two provinces saw a GDP growth rate of 4.7%. According to local statistical authorities, Fujian's high-tech industries and equipment manufacturing increased 17.1% and 13.7% year on year, and the value-added of its digital economy reached 2.6 trillion yuan.

In addition, the GDP growth rate of 16 provincial regions, including seven on the Top 10 list, namely Shandong, Zhejiang, Henan, Hubei, Fujian, Hunan and Anhui, outpaced the national average of 3% in 2022.
