Beijing's sub-center in Tongzhou district will build a cultural and tourism zone centered on Universal Beijing Resort and the Grand Canal, according to a three-year action plan issued recently.

Currently, a 62-kilometer-long waterway connects the Grand Canal in Beijing with the Hebei region. The cultural and tourism area in the sub-center will develop river night tours by linking the Grand Canal through the Liangshui River. In addition, the area will spur consumer spending at the Universal Studios and the CityWalk. More transportation hubs and commercial complexes will be built to provide various travel and consumption choices for tourists by 2025.

The district will also build the Grand Canal Tourism Area - a 5A-level scenic spot by 2025, and connect the Universal Studios theme park with the Grand Canal through waterways, according to the sub-center's 14th Five-Year-Plan on cultural and tourism development.

Apart from themed tourism, the area will promote IP design, digital innovation, sports and entertainment to boost services and consumption in a bid to build an international tourism and consumption site, said an official of the area.

The area will also promote the integration of sports and entertainment, nurture various types of entertainment, and pool resources to promote the integrated development of culture and tourism in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region. Policies and services to support cultural and tourism development and attract talent will also be rolled out, according to the three-year action plan.

By 2035, the cultural and tourism area in the sub-center will have a world-class theme park and become a demonstration area for integrated development of culture, tourism, commerce, and sports, according to the plan.
