The "two mountains" concept (i.e., lucid waters and lush mountains are invaluable assets) is the core concept for ecological civilization construction in China, which has been encouraging Chinese cities and villages to pursue high-quality and sustainable growth through protecting the environment and developing green industries.

Instead of pursuing only the usual annual average GDP growth target, Yanqing is experimenting with a new, greener measurement of development called "gross ecosystem product," or GEP.

In recent years, Yanqing has won such honors as the National Ecological Civilization Construction Demonstration Zone, the "Two Mountains" practice innovation base, the national forest city, the national water ecological civilization city and China's natural oxygen bar.

Yanqing has the UNESCO world heritage site, the Great Wall. It held the 2019 World Horticultural Expo and 2022 Winter Olympics. The district is beefing up efforts for sustainable rural development and eco-friendly tourism.

The seminar gathered officials and experts from Yanqing district, the Research Center for Eco-Environmental Sciences of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, National Center for Climate Change Strategy and International Cooperation and Chinese Research Academy of Environmental Sciences.
