The cultural and tourism consumption market in Beijing experienced a strong recovery trend during the five-day May Day holiday, which ended on Wednesday. Both tourism revenue and visitor numbers reached new highs.

Beijing attracted 9.13 million tourists during the holiday, a year-on-year increase of 198.2% and a growth of 6.6% compared to the pre-pandemic level in 2019. The total tourism revenue reached 13.46 billion yuan ($1.8 billion), a year-on-year increase of 752.3% and a comparable growth of 13.9% compared to 2019.

The average occupancy rate of three-star and above hotels was 77.5%, an increase of 10 percentage points compared to the same period in 2019. Newly emerged popular scenic spots, including Universal Studios Beijing, the Olympic Green, and Qianmen Street, attracted many visitors. Universal Studios Beijing broke its daily attendance record on the second day of the holiday.

Over the holiday period, 606 travel agencies in Beijing welcomed 331,000 tourists across 12,000 tourist groups, which reflects an 80% increase in group tourist numbers compared to the same period in 2019. This surge in demand led to popular attractions such as the Palace Museum and Prince Kung's Mansion being fully booked well in advance of the holiday.
