The 2023 International Bamboo Brand Expo & The Fourth China (Yibin) International Bamboo Industry Development Conference kicked off in Yibin, Sichuan province, on September 6.

More than 500 officials, experts and entrepreneurs related to the industry took part in the event themed green economy, low-carbon development and the development of bamboo industry in the future. 

Aiming at promoting the high-quality development of the bamboo industry, the expo and the conference consisted of online and offline activities, which included investment promotion fairs, launch of reports, seminars, release of Chinese bamboo brand lists, fact-finding inspections to Yibin, bamboo products exhibitions and sales, with their focus on the trend of the bamboo industry in the future. 

These activities highlighted two directions of the development of the industry — to use bamboo products to replace plastics and to tap into the potential of bamboo as a source of food for human being. 

At the opening of the event, Wang Junzhong, chief of the reform and development department of National Forestry and Grassland Administration, pointed out China's bamboo industry is changing from the track of high-speed development to the one of high-quality development.

By 2025, the total output value of the national bamboo industry is expected to exceed 700 billion yuan ($95.53 billion).

Wang recognized Yibin's strengths in bamboo industry, and vowed to continue to support the city's high-quality development in that regard.

According to Li Tianman, chief of the Sichuan forestry and grassland bureau, the bamboo forest area of Sichuan reached 1.22 million hectares as of the end of last year, and the total output value of the province's bamboo industry exceeded 100 billion yuan, and the per capita income of bamboo farmers hit 4,800 yuan. 

Fang Cunhao, Yibin's Party chief, said in the opening remarks at the event, by holding the activity, Yibin is to transform the advantage of its bamboo resources into the economic advantage of bamboo industry and realize the coordination and integration of ecological protection and green development. He noted that the city will take the conference as an opportunity to strengthen cooperation and exchanges, and further explore the green and low-carbon development path of bamboo industry. 

At the opening ceremony, Cao Fuliang, academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and former president of Nanjing Forestry University, gave a keynote speech on the topic of "Smart Bamboo Industry and Rural Revitalization", expounding on the aspects of smart bamboo industry system construction, future subversive technology in China's forestry field, high-quality development of Sichuan's modern bamboo industry. 

Yibin has 26 modern bamboo industry bases, 408 bamboo processing enterprises, 17 bamboo ecological tourism scenic spots. In 2022, the city's comprehensive output value of bamboo industry reached 35.35 billion yuan, ranking the first in Sichuan. The city was named "Bamboo Capital of China" by China Forestry Industry Federation at the opening ceremony of the event.
