Beijing had the highest per capita GDP among China's provincial-level regions at 200,000 yuan ($27,677) in 2023, according to the statistical report released by the Beijing Municipal Bureau of Statistics on Thursday.

The report showed that the city's GDP grew to nearly 4.38 trillion yuan (US$605 billion), an increase of 5.2% year on year.

Beijing's economic development demonstrates great resilience and potential, said a person in charge of the statistical report. Specifically, the annual value added by the service industry increased by 6.1% compared to the previous year, serving as a primary driver of economic recovery.

The report revealed that, in 2023, large-scale industrial and service enterprises achieved operating revenues of 2.8 trillion yuan and 17.3 trillion yuan, respectively, representing increases of 3.6% and 2% compared to the previous year.

To further promote the city's high-quality development, Beijing has boosted its innovation capabilities. From January to November 2023, research and development (R&D) expenditures of large and medium-sized key enterprises in the city, totaling 350.11 billion yuan, saw a 4.6% increase year-on-year. R&D expenses in industrial and technology service sectors registered double-digit growth.

The city has continued its efforts to establish itself as a global benchmark for the digital economy. In 2023, the digital economy's value added reached nearly 1.88 trillion yuan, representing 42.9% of the city's GDP, 1.3 percentage points higher than the previous year.

Additionally, Beijing is advancing its commitment to high-level opening-up. In 2023, the city completed its first national pilot project for facilitating and standardizing cross-border trade. The total import and export value for the year reached 3.6 trillion yuan, marking a 0.3% increase over the previous year.

Moreover, people's livelihoods have greatly improved with the per capita disposable income of urban residents reaching 81,752 yuan, a growth of 5.2% after deducting price factors.

Despite adverse effects from natural disasters, the city maintained a stable grain sowing area of over 1 million mu, with a total grain output of 478,000 metric tons, marking a 5.3% increase from the previous year.

The city has further intensified efforts to enhance housing infrastructure with 82,000 units of affordable rental housing planned and constructed throughout the year, alongside the completion of 93,000 units of various types of affordable housing.

Moreover, by the end of last year, the city had 12,518 medical and health institutions and 1,991 kindergartens. Furthermore, the city counted 20 public libraries and 226 museums.
