Since February, Beijing has taken action against mandatory QR code scanning in over 200 restaurants and parking lots, according to the municipal cyberspace administration.

Fee payment QR codes in over 100 parking lots and food ordering QR codes in over 100 restaurants have been upgraded, so that they no longer collet users' WeChat profile photos and usernames. Business entities have been instructed to enhance privacy protection by adding logout options and informing users about privacy policies while providing QR code services.

In parking lots, QR codes are provided for fee payment and membership registration, the latter allowing users to input their license plate numbers in advance. Businesses are now required to clearly indicate the type of QR codes being scanned.

The campaign aiming at bolstering privacy protection will continue until the end of April. Authorities are cautioning businesses against illegally collecting and transmitting personal information, and imposing penalties for severe violations.
