An education official has fallen to his death from a six-story hotel room in the northern Chinese city of Chengde, Hebei Province, local police said Wednesday.

The incident happened at about 3 p.m. Tuesday. Hu Deli, director of the Chengde Municipal Education Bureau, was found dead after falling from the Bifeng Hotel, said Wang Yujie, deputy director of the Chengde Municipal Public Security Bureau.

Police said that Hu's death was suicide but no detailed information was provided.

"Hu was an introverted nice man. He had done well in his job. He had not exhibited any unusual behavior recently," a person who worked with Hu but declined to be named told Xinhua.

Hu became the bureau director in October 2008.
